Speaker – Robbie Shilliam, Johns Hopkins University
Our renowned Stein Rokkan Lecture is typically held annually as part of our Joint Sessions of Workshops. For the second year running, we are thrilled to have opened the Stein Rokkan Lecture to the wider ECPR community, as part of our House Series.
Delivered by Robbie Shilliam, this talk spoke to the contemporary moral panic over 'wokeness', its supposed infiltration into academic spaces and its purported degeneration of the ethos of higher education.
This 90-minute lecture made the case that so-called 'domestic' race relations are best understood as an internationalised discourse on black competency to inhabit white spaces and an important part of the academic development of British International Relations.
Robbie Shilliam is Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. He researches the political and intellectual complicities of colonialism and race in the global order.
He is most recently the author of Decolonizing Politics (Polity, 2022), and Race and the Undeserving Poor: From Abolition to Brexit (Agenda, 2018).
