Understanding the Domestic Challenges to the Governance of the European Union
From Yanis Varoufakis to Nigel Farage, the challenges to the European Union’s system of governance are deep, complex and interrelated. The normative and the structural combine: the politics of populism, identity, and confined choice are matched by institutional issues of accountability and delivery. Nor are the problems confined to Europe’s periphery: as Viktor Orbán or the AfD indicate. At this existential moment, we learn more of what the EU stands for and what might bring it down. Political science, more than economics, provides the diagnosis and offers the options.
Kevin Featherstone is Head of the European Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he is the Eleftherios Venizelos Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies and Professor of European Politics. He has published widely on Greek politics and history and on the politics of the European Union. His book, co-authored with Kenneth Dyson, The Road to Maastricht, was listed by the European Parliament as one of the ‘100 books on Europe to remember’. He was awarded the Order of the Phoenix by the President of the Hellenic Republic in 2013.
