Getting there

From Italy

The easiest way to get to Pisa from any location in Italy is by bus, using FlixBus – prices start from €9.

NB: the departure time depends on the day of the week, so check the information for the desired date. Find more information here.

Prefer a faster alternative?

Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy. View the train schedule and buy your ticket on the carrier's website.

Sky Bus Lines Caronna runs frequent bus connections between Pisa and Florence. The service runs every day, all year round; the duration of the journey is about 60 minutes, traffic permitting, without intermediate stops.

Reach Pisa directly in 3 hours by high-speed Frecciabianca. Trains run between 06:25 and 20:35, approximately every two hours. Trains depart from Roma Termini central station and arrive at Pisa Centrale station.

You can also take the Frecciargento or Frecciarossa high-speed train from Rome's main stations to Florence, and change to the regional train to Pisa. From Florence mains station Santa Maria Novella, Regionale trains leave frequently and reach Pisa in 60 – 80 minutes. Find more information on the national rail's website.

From Pisa Airport

You will find a shuttle train just outside the airport, connecting to Pisa downtown. Trains from the airport leave every half hour for the central train station and run until the early evening.

You can buy your shuttle tickets from the information desk in the arrivals lounge (expect to pay around €5 for a one-way journey on this shuttle). It only takes five minutes to reach the central train station in Pisa’s city centre.

When arranging travel and accommodation, please ensure that your booking is refundable.

It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance. ECPR is not liable for reimbursing the cost of travel or accommodation made by participants.

Plan your visit

To help you plan your trip, our local organising team has put together suggestions for what to see and where to eat in and around Pisa.

Piazza dei Miracoli (Piazza del Duomo)

Lying just outside the historical centre of the medieval city, this enormous square is home to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Baptistery and Campo Santo.

Santa Maria della Spina

A small but beautiful church along the Arno that most certainly deserves a visit, if you get the chance!

Piazza dei Cavalieri

A landmark in Pisa and its second main square, Piazza dei Cavalieri is also home to Scuola Normale Superiore.

Keith Haring Mural

A mural created in 1984 by American artist Keith Haring, located closer to the train station, near the Piazza Emanuele Vittorio.

University of Pisa Botanical Gardens

Hugely popular and extremely beautiful due to the variety of species it houses, the gardens are hidden from the main city but are within a few minutes' stroll from the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Museo delle Navi Antiche di Pisa

A small but fascinating museum of maritime history exhibiting ancient ships and artefacts.

Top tip: Don't forget to take a picture on Ponte di Mezzo! It's the bridge that you will probably cross quite often during your stay in Pisa as it connects the city's two main streets – Corso Italia and Borgo Stretto.

Pisa offers a variety of lovely bars and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Italian dishes, have a fresh aperitivo after a long day or just start your morning with a good cappuccino.

If you would like information about these places, the event staff will be happy to provide you with some guidance and ideas. The event staff will be easily recognisable, wearing a red T-shirt with the ECPR logo on.
