Conference Guidelines

Conference format

The Academic Programme will be organised in the format of Sections and Panels, with each Section organising a variety of Panels in a given field. The conference will provide space for researchers from various backgrounds – Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, Political Economy, History, Sociology, etc. – to present and discuss cutting-edge research focused on the pressing questions of European integration. We are committed to methodological pluralism, scientific quality, and societal relevance and we encourage dialogue across academic disciplines.

We welcome new theoretical and empirical research that reflects on the ever-changing nature of the EU; the democratic legitimacy of the integration process; the evolution, functioning and effects of EU policies and institutions; the role of the EU in the broader world, and so on.

Submission process

Sections have already been approved and can be viewed/accessed on the Academic Programme. The process for submitting Panel and Paper proposals to the Sections is as follows:

Call for Panels (with Papers) and Individual Papers

Deadline 14 October 2015 (midnight GMT)

There will not be a separate call for Papers. All Panel proposals must include 3-4 Papers. (Papers submitted as part of a Panel do not need to be resubmitted individually).

Anyone wishing to propose an individual Paper will need to propose it to a specific Section. If accepted, the Section Chair will then allocate it to an appropriate Panel.

All proposals must be submitted online via MyECPR, therefore all participants must have a MyECPR profile.

Individuals may perform each conference function - Section Chair, Panel Chair, Discussant and Paper giver - only once within the Academic Programme.

This stage of the process is open to anyone wishing to propose a complete Panel with Papers, and those wanting to propose individual Papers to a particular Section. Panels should include 3-4 papers. There are no rules requiring proposers of Panels to belong to an ECPR member institution, but they must hold a MyECPR account.

Panel and Paper proposers have to complete the proposal process through the MyECPR area of the ECPR website. Once logged in, they will be asked to select which Section their Panel or Paper should be considered for (and, in the case of topics that cross more than one theme, to include the name of the alternative Section within their abstract). Panel proposers are also required to select at least three keywords.

When completing their application, Panel proposers must include details of the Panel abstract, Chair, Discussant, Papers and Paper givers.

You should have the following information to hand to submit a Panel proposal:

  • The name/number of the Section you wish to propose to
  • The title of the Panel (no more than 20 words long)
  • The abstract (no more than 300 words)
  • Selection of 3-8 keywords
  • The Panel Co-Chair’s email address as registered in their MyECPR account (if applicable)
  • The Discussant’s email address as registered in their MyECPR account (if applicable)
  • The title of each Paper
  • The abstract of each Paper (no more than 300 words)
  • The Presenter’s email address as registered in their MyECPR account
  • The Co-author’s email address as registered in their My ECPR account (if applicable)

You should have the following information to hand to submit an individual Paper proposal:

  • The name/number of the Section you wish to propose to
  • The title of the Paper  (no more than 20 words long)
  • The abstract of the Paper (no more than 300 words)
  • Selection of 3-8 keywords
  • The Co-author’s email address as registered in their My ECPR account (if applicable)

The deadline to submit complete Panels (with Papers) and individual Paper proposals is 14 October 2015 (midnight GMT).

Information for Section Chairs

From 7 October 2015, Section Chairs can view Panels and Papers being proposed to their Section via MyECPR. From 15 October 2015 they may accept and decline Panel and Paper proposals to their Section.  Further information on how to do this will be sent in due course. Section Chairs have until 17 November 2015 to finalise their Sections via MyECPR.

When judging Panels and Papers for acceptance, Section Chairs should use the following criteria

  • Quality of proposal
  • Fit with Section theme

From 18 November 2015 the Academic Convenors will review the accepted Panels and Papers in order to finalise the Academic Programme. The deadline for Academic Convenors to complete their review is 30 November 2015.

The Academic Convenors may use their discretion to reallocate Panels and Papers to Sections and Panels where this is required. Section Chairs may, therefore, be asked to accommodate new Panels in their Sections and/or extra Papers within their Panels.

The ECPR will email Section Chairs, Panel Chairs, and Paper givers with the Academic Convenors’ decision in early December 2015, when the full Academic Programme will be available on the website.

Final Academic Programme

The Academic Programme will be available on the ECPR website in early December 2015 and participants will be notified of the outcome of their proposal by this date. A full timetable will be available by late-March 2016.  Participants should ensure scheduling requests have been submitted to the Events Team by 1 March 2016.  Please note:  we are unable to guarantee scheduling requests will be accommodated, but we will do our best to schedule Panels accordingly.

Amendments to Section/Panel/Paper information must be sent to the Events Team in order to be included in the online programme.  The deadline for amendments to be included in the printed programme is to be confirmed.

Online registration opens on 5 January 2016. Further details, including registration fees, will be on the ECPR website in due course; please check the registration page for the cancellation policy. Participants attending and appearing in any capacity in the Academic Programme must pay their registration fee before midnight GMT on 29 February 2016.
