Accommodation Information

The local organising team at the University of Bamberg have negotiated special rates for Winter School participants at a number of locations in the city. From more upmarket hotels and self-catering apartments, to a high standard youth hostel and various budget hotels; there should be an option for every taste and budget. The list of participating locations is below:

Please note the booking deadlines for all special rates vary and there may still be some minor changes to the rates.

Hostel

Backpackers Bamberg is an independent, small and cosy hostel situated right between Bamberg railway station and the city centre, offering good connections to the Social Science Faculty building and only a short walk to the city centre. There is free Wi-Fi and a basic breakfast (tea, coffee and cereals) is included.

Jugendgästehaus am Kaulberg is the main youth hostel in Bamberg, situated at the edge of the city centre, close to the Cathedral and most of the medieval and baroque areas. Opened in 2011 and fully renovated, the rate negotiated for the Winter School includes breakfast and free Wi-Fi. The bus stop to the central bus terminal (ZOB) is right opposite the main entrance.

• Single ensuite room: €39.90 per night
• Double ensuite room: €32.90 per night, per person
• Bunk bed with 4-6 beds per dorm: €27.90 per night, per person

The hostel will require your name, address, telephone number, email address, gender, preferred room type, arrival/departure date and time. The full amount must be paid four weeks before you arive. You can cancel four weeks before you arrive. An 80% deposit is charged for late cancellations. Please inform them if you expect to arrive after 10pm.

The booking deadline is 18 December 18 2017 and the offer is subject to availability, so early booking is highly recommended. Rooms are available for the whole Winter School period but there is already limited availability on 2 and 3 March.

Hotels

Breakfast and free Wi-Fi is included unless stated otherwise.

Hotel Weierich is situated right in the middle of the UN World Heritage city centre and close to the river Regnitz. The famous baroque Old Town Hall, 'Little Venice' and the lively Sandstraße and Austraße are very close, giving access to a range of bars, cafés and clubs. Bus timetables to the Social Science Faculty building in Feldkirchenstrasse vary. There is a bus stop just outside the hotel with one change, or a five-minute walk to the central bus terminal ZOB for a direct connection. A bus from the central bus terminal ZOB to the Social Science Faculty takes from five to 15-minutes, depending on the service. There's one slightly faster service (931), a few normal ones (901, 907, 914) and a slower one, driving a non-direct route (915). Between 08:00 and 19:00 you should expect one of the buses to the Social Science Faculty building every 10-15 minutes.

• Double or a twin ensuite room for single occupancy: €65 per night
• Double or a twin ensuite room for two people: €75 per night

Prices apply for a minimum of five nights. Less than five nights incur €5 per night.

Stadthotel Andres is situated in a quiet street just a two-minute walk from the train station. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the city centre and about 20-minutes to the faculty. A bus to the Social Science Faculty building from the train station only takes about three-minutes. Shops, a bank and a post office are all very close.

• Single ensuite room: €45 per night
• Double or a twin ensuite room for single occupancy: €55 per night
• Double or a twin ensuite room for two people: €65 per night

Prices apply for a minimum of five nights. Less than five nights incur €5 per night.

Hotel Alt Bamberg is situated right in the middle of the World Heritage city centre; with restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, a post office and different ATM’s just around the corner. The central bus terminal ZOB and a small supermarket are only a two-minute walk away. If you feel like a pleasant walk, you can follow the canal (two minutes on foot) to the Hain park and enjoy Bamberg’s pleasure grounds.

Hotel Central is in a refined Bavarian-style property, only a three-minute walk from the very heart of Bamberg. From the central railway station (distance approx. 1.5km, 20-minute walk) a taxi to the Hotel Central costs around €6.00. You can also use all bus lines opposite the railway station square going towards the central bus terminal ZOB. At the central bus terminal, get off and walk for about 150m and you’re there.

• Single ensuite room: €59 per night (€56 for 5 nights or more)

Hotel Sandstern is in the heart of Bamberg’s nightlife district, and minutes from some of the city’s most famous sights including the Cathedral, the Abbey, the main market place Green Market, the Old Town Hall and Little Venice. You can enjoy a variety of Bamberg’s beer places just outside the hotel in one of the ‘tied houses’ or enjoy a coffee at one of the cafés just across the lower bridge over the river Regnitz. The central bus terminal ZOB is only a 10-minute walk where you can catch a direct bus to the Social Science Faculty building. The bus from the central bus terminal ZOB to the Social Science Faculty building takes from five to 15-minutes, depending on the service. There's one slightly faster service (931), a few normal ones (901, 907, 914) and a slower taking a non-direct route (915). However, noise from the works will be restricted to daytime hours.

• Single ensuite room: €62.50 per night
• Double ensuite room: €84 per night or €76.50 for single occupancy

Most of them are located in close proximity to the city centre, but generally they are in calm and peaceful areas including 'Gardeners city'.
