European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS)

You can earn one ECTS credit for 25–30 hours' work. This equates to up to four credits for a one-week Main Course or eight credits for a two-week main course or up to six credits for a one-week Advanced Workshop.

On successful completion of the required work, and following receipt of your grades from the Instructor, we will email a credits certificate to you.

In addition to ECTS credits, all participants who attend 90% of their course classes will receive a certificate of attendance, provided they sign the attendance sheets.

If you are taking two main courses per day, please be aware that the workload is very time-consuming and demanding. Instructors can award two credits per course, on completion of the required work. Further credits can be given if you complete the additional tasks specified in the course outline, and if the credits have been approved by the Instructor and an Academic Convenor.

If you want to earn credits, tell your Instructor on the first day of the course when you sign the attendance sheet in class.

Tasks

Instructors will make at least two of these four options available. To acquire credits, the task(s) must be assessed and graded.

  • In-class project
  • Presentations
  • Daily assignments. No extensive feedback is promised on daily assignments. The Academic Convenors recommend grading these on the scale of 1 – good, 0.66 – sufficient, 0.33 – insufficient, 0 – did not submit, and averaged to get the final grade for this task.
  • Take-home exam
  • Take-home paper. For take-home assignments after class, the Instructor will set a deadline for completion no later than three weeks after the end of the course.

Grading scale

Each country or/and institution may have their own conversion tables for grades. This scale is merely designed to facilitate conversion and provide some first and general indication about the grading used by the Winter School Instructors. Local institutions will convert the scale according to their own conversion tables.
