Abstract

Phasing out coal is an essential element of the global energy transition. At the same time, the coal industry exhibits a high degree of local entrenchment, labor mobilization and cultural identification among workers. Employment impacts from coal phase-out policies are highly localized, increasing their visibility and political salience. This panel brings together papers exploring the political economy of coal phase-out in a wide range of countries aimed at distilling related lessons for furthering a global transition to sustainable energy.
