The gathering momentum to ‘decolonise’ various aspects of public life, including public spaces, museums and university curricula has exposed various faultlines in societies around the world, which link closely to political differences over the nature and demands of racial justice. But who is fighting the ‘culture wars’ and why? In this discussion, the panellists will critically examine the propositions for why the curriculum needs to be decolonised, the nature of arguments against this position, an analysis of the wider institutional structures of the university and how these relate to wider structural inequalities within and between societies. The panel will also examine the practice of decolonising and its enmeshment with intellectual and institutional demands in contemporary higher education.
