This panel will examine to what extent deliberative mini-publics can make a valuable contribution to environmental governance and help societies address the climate emergency. It will focus on the recent new wave of climate assemblies, populated through sortition and developed to embody principles and practices of deliberative democracy, and how they relate to other parts of the political system. It will address questions such as: Why are we seeing a big increase in the number of climate assemblies? What relationships do climate assemblies have to other parts of the political system such as government, parliament, civil society, the media, other democratic innovations, and general public? To what extent is the focus on climate change governance a determining factor in these relationships? How does this vary across different levels of governance? Which other contextual factors are the most significant in determining the nature of these relationships? To what extent are climate assemblies having an impact on climate debate, policy, and action? How do public institutions work with the results from climate assemblies? What are the challenges of developing policies on the basis of the recommendations from climate assemblies? To what extent would the implementation of climate assembly recommendations help address the climate emergency?
