Abstract

Financial crises, COVID 19 pandemic, new societal cleavages, and other external shocks had a substantial impact on the functioning of democracy all around the world. In this framework, the role of parties has substantially changed after the first two decades of the 21st century. This panel explores how and to what extent the role, functions, and internal dynamics of parties have adapted to the post-pandemic societal and political context. What are the recent developments of intra-party democracy? How do parties stimulate members’ involvement? How is technology used to reach new segments of electorate? How are campaigns conducted with or without digital technologies?
