Abstract

This panel will bring together different reflections on the ways in which mafia-type groups (Italian mafias and Japanese Yakuza in this case) exploit the underworld-upper world connections to gain advantages, to survive and to adapt their nature to the worlds they live in. With reflections on the interactions between mafias and deviant masonic lodges in Italy, on the convergent interests between 'ndrangheta in Germany and power structures and on the changing behaviours of the Yakuza in the legal economy, this paper will push forward a critical account of mafias and power and reflect on state's responses.
