Abstract

Gathering, analysing, and publishing the results of data is a central component of scholarly research, especially for political science and the social sciences who rely on both quantitative and qualitative data to produce real-world analysis. The expanding digital world has led to the development of Open Research, Open Access, and Open Data (more on which will be discussed in another session) as well as a proliferation of unverified information, predatory journals, and questions around integrity. This has led to a growth in concern around the ethics of data; how it is collected, stored, reported, accessed, and how expectations around its accessibility impacts researchers’ options in publication. This session aims to discuss the issues surrounding the ethics of data; the importance of ethical practices, how scholarly communication is developing how it engages with data, and what resources might be available to researchers. The panel specifically includes scholars who touch on subjects across and outside of political science, to help understand the different conventions and expectations that can impact interdisciplinary research.
