The ethics of migration policy dilemmas

Abstract

Speakers: Julia Mourão Permoser, University of Innsbruck Martin Ruhs, European University Institute What are the main ethical dilemmas of migration policy, and how can they be best analyzed? In this talk we introduce a new research agenda in migration studies that focuses on studying ethical dilemmas of migration policy. We will define what are “hard ethical dilemmas” and how they differ from other trade-offs that political actors are faced with in the migration field, and we will illustrate our approach with regards to two issues that pose hard ethical dilemmas: Search and Rescue at Sea and Temporary Labour Migration Programmes
