Abstract

The European Commission has proposed a set of regulations, including the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and other legal frameworks such as the Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI), to supervise and control the digital space. However, there are still many questions that need to be answered about these regulatory instruments, and we need to examine the challenges and opportunities that regulating the digital market space brings for the EU internal market. Possible areas of interest include examining the regulatory frameworks of technologies and analyzing the risks and benefits they pose to individuals and society, as how competition policy aims to tackle these issues in the digital market space. In particular, this panel examines the challenges and opportunities in the digital market for regulatory governance in the EU and aims to critically analyze proposed regulations. Some of the topics which this panel will cover include (a) the role of politics in shaping the regulatory digital market space; (b) exploring policy processes and political drivers of the reform of the framework for Artificial Intelligence (AI) regulation and governance in the EU; (c) understanding the European Commission's proposed AI regulation, focusing on its implications for policing and criminal justice; (d) examining the EU's risk-based and principle-based approach to regulating digital technologies; and (e) analysing the impact of digital platforms and AI on competition, mergers, and the Digital Single Market strategy. We also welcome contributions that address these themes or related topics, including papers that explore the challenges and opportunities for regulating the digital market space in the EU, analyze the role of politics in shaping the regulatory process, and investigate the interrelation between policy domains, such as the GDPR and AI, competition rules, or the extraterritoriality of the Digital Single Market. We look forward to receiving your abstracts and are excited to hear your insights and expertise in this rapidly evolving field.
