Abstract

This panel explores the implications of the use of generative AI in politics and political science research and communication. AI technology has a revolutionary capacity to generate text, imagery, and audio content. We will discuss its potential to supercharge research as well as information dissemination and use, but also associated risks and threats in an age of increased misinformation and disinformation. Revitalized uncertainties around authorship, intellectual property, transparency, and accuracy can introduce and perpetuate distortions and undermine societal trust in public debate, decision-making, and scientific evidence, posing pressing questions about the ethics and responsibilities of technology companies and policymakers – and also of academic researchers and publishers.
