Abstract

Offline as well as online public spheres are marked by power relations, social hierarchies, and economic asymmetries. One of the crucial questions in the study of the emergence and formation of public spheres is, how different individual as well as collective actors shape publics, gain visibility and influence how publics are structured. In digital public spheres in particular, we see various forms such as fragmentation, emerging counter-publics, alternative media channels or disinformation campaigns that impact the actor constellation as well as the framing and spread of ideas on social media platforms. Our panel brings together papers that shed light on the role of different political actors such as politicians, social movements, interest groups, political influencers as well as regular users within gendered public spheres. On the one hand, it examines how different (political) actors are interconnected, enable or constrain the formation of digital networks (across countries) and create different types of visibility. On the other hand, the panel highlights how political ideas, frames and narratives on feminism, gender equality and LGBTQI* rights spread and resonate on social media platforms. By doing so, the different papers in the panel offer new insights in the underlying conflicts as well as coalition structure on the actor as well as ideational level in gendered digital spheres.
