Tuesday 14:00 - 15:30 CEST (09/07/2024)
This panel seeks to delve into the tensions in LGBTQI+ politics in times of populism and cultural wars, and their impact on political landscapes, with a particular focus on the interactions between movements and civil society actors on the one hand, and political parties and institutional actors on the other. The evolution of these dynamics prompts a critical examination of how radical right populism contributes to the mainstreaming of exclusionary politics. Additionally, the panel aims to provide new insights into how anti-gender movements shape collective identities and meaning construction, and how they attack academic freedoms across European countries, as well as how homosexual individuals shape voting for the radical right, or when populist radical right parties adopt homonationalist stances. By examining the outcomes of intertwining between anti-gender politics and the radical right, the panel seeks to elucidate the political meanings, societal attitudes and individual experiences arising from the interplay between anti-gender movements and established political structures in relation to LGBTQI+ rights.
