Abstract

Traditional and social media, and entertainment broadcasting shape gendered and raced understandings of the political, as well as the ways in which candidates, representatives and journalists exercise agency in response to these dynamics. Papers on this panel ask: How is the gendered construction of political leadership in media discourse is shaped by campaign events? How do visual representations of presidential candidates come to define possible leadership styles? How do radical right parties instrumentalize journalistic representations of gender violence in pursuit of their electoral aims? How are political exits by women mediated by the press, and how are what specific patterns of coverage are shaped by racialized, Indigenous, or LGBTQ+ women in this context? How do semi-fictionalized television ‘biopics’ of women in the political arena shape narratives and ideas about women and power, as well as collective memories of individuals in political situations?
