This panel explores radical right political parties from various perspectives, to obtain a better understanding of their issue positioning and (potential) electoral success. While we know a lot about this type of parties’ positions on immigration, gender, and welfare, other topics have received less academic focus. This panel thus includes papers that explore the parties’ stances on trade policy, the economy, and climate change in a comparative perspective, while a fourth paper discusses why we are yet to see a European party which solely campaigns around conspiracy theories (unlike the Japanese Sanseito party). Finally, the last paper explores the conditions determining the electoral success or failure of both right-wing and left-wing populist parties, thereby providing further insights on the causes for populist vote share changes over time.
