Abstract

This panel focuses on the interplay between elite affective polarization, voter sentiments, and their collective impact on the structure of political systems and democratic stability. The panel will examine the extent of partisan animosity among politicians, its influence on voters’ hostility, as well as disjunctions between political elites' and citizens' understandings of democracy. It highlights the relation between elite actions and voter reactions in shaping affective polarization.
