Abstract

Since the 2000s we have been observing the formation, breakthrough and institutionalization of numerous new political parties. These new political parties gain their strengths from different kind of resources: they have strong roots in digital movements, they secure their first parliamentary representation through second order elections or make use of a new repertoire of political positions. This panel examines the sources of success of a variety of new political parties, both examining the causes of initial successful breakthrough and why some parties are able to endure. The papers highlight strategic aspects, organizational features and electoral appeals made by those parties.
