Abstract

This panel presents a range of papers tackling various differences and inequalities related to gender, age, and other social factors. The papers analyse what types of news contents Austrian adolescents encounter in their daily social media use, to what extent news contents overlap with traditional news media coverage, and what types of news contents are lacking in adolescents' news consumption when compared to traditional media; how inequalities in Europe can sustain themselves through political discourse, more particularly how in the context of EU integration, responsibility for inequality reduction is deflected to those at the weaker end of an unequal relationship, whereas these inequalities are also a political choice; why women are more protectionist than men and how this apparent gender gap can be explained by respondents' knowledge of the diverse consequences of liberalization; and how unequal opportunity structures within parties give rise to gender differences in career capital, even for those who reach the highest political party position.
