Abstract

This panel explores the challenges and phenomena contributing to democratic backsliding, a critical issue confronting European democracies and beyond. In an era marked by profound transformations and uncertainties, this interdisciplinary discussion seeks to dissect the multifaceted dimensions of democracy under pressure. We aim to unravel the complex interplay between internal dynamics, such as populism, conspiracy theories, and identity politics, and external forces, including the international diffusion of autocratic practices and the socio-political impact of global transitions. This panel calls for an integrative analysis of the current junctures at which democracy stands, weaving together the threads of populism, conspiracy theories, elite and the public's role in shaping democratic resilience. We seek contributions that dissect how these elements, in concert, contribute to the texture of democratic discourse and engagement. By exploring the symbiotic relationships between political narratives and public sentiment, from the influence of nationalism on policy preferences to the broader implications of digital and environmental transitions, our discussion aims to capture the dynamic interplay of factors that challenge and bolster democratic institutions. Additionally, insights into how these interactions manifest across different political landscapes, influencing liberal belief systems and driving EU policy responses to democratic threats, are especially valued. By integrating these diverse yet interconnected perspectives, the panel contributes to a richer, more nuanced dialogue on the resilience and vulnerability of democracies today. It invites a broad spectrum of disciplinary approaches and methodologies to offer fresh insights into the complex dynamics that shape the future of democratic governance, highlighting areas of concern and pathways toward sustainability and resilience. Through this debate, we seek to foster a comprehensive understanding of how contemporary democracies can navigate the challenges of backsliding, ensuring their adaptability and endurance in a rapidly changing world.
