Abstract

Speaker: Caroline Schlaufer, University of Bern Annemieke van den Dool, Duke Kunshan University Chairs: Johanna Kuenzler, Deutsche Hochschule für Verwaltungswissenschaften Speyer Johanna Hornung , Universität Bern Karin Ingold, Universität Bern Vilém Novotny, Charles University Policy process frameworks and theories were originally developed in the democratic context of the United States. Despite their roots in democratic values, these frameworks and theories are increasingly used to examine nondemocracies. Given important differences between democracies and autocracies, this raises questions about the desirability, limitations, and future directions of this development. In this webinar, we present results of a systematic literature review of studies that use existing policy process frameworks and theories in authoritarian settings and assess the extent to which the theories are, can, and should be used to explain key aspects of the policy process in such contexts.
