This panel will address transitional or post-conflict justice and peacebuilding in democratizing societies in theory and practice. Papers will address the general challenges of pursuing accountability while trying to make or maintain peace through comparative analysis as well as individual region and country studies. One contributor will consider the specific role of the Inter-American human rights system in promoting transitional justice and democratization, while others will consider transitional justice and democratization in the Balkans and in Cambodia. Another paper will consider the specific challenges of pursuing accountability in an unstable democracy facing long-term electoral difficulties—Kenya. Another paper will consider the specific challenges to transitional justice and democratization posed by essential processes of demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants. Finally, one contribution will consider the wider challenges of pursuing peace and justice. Contributors will be drawn from Europe and North America and are deliberately interdisciplinary: Chandra Lekha Sriram, University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, School of Law (UK) (panel proposer, chair, and discussant); Karin Aggestam and Annika Bjorkdahl, University of Lund, Department of Political Science (Sweden); Olga Martin Ortega and Johanna Herman, University of East London, School of Law and Centre on Human Rights in Conflict (UK); Par Engstrom, University of London, School of Advanced Study and Human Rights Consortium (UK); Stephen Brown, University of Ottawa, School of Political Studies (Canada); and Lars Waldorf, University of York, Centre for Applied Human Rights (UK).
