Abstract

Speaker Dr. Emy Matesan, Wesleyan University In the aftermath of severe repression, political movements frequently go into exile. Some are able to take advantage of political opportunities abroad to rebuild and bounce back, whereas others further break apart in exile. How can we understand organizational resilience in exile? This talk first builds on the diverse and growing literature on resilience to discuss how we can conceptualize organizational resilience in exile. Then, drawing on a qualitative analysis of two Islamist movements, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the Tunisian Ennahda, the talk will briefly outline an inductive theory of what drives Islamist resilience abroad.
