Abstract

The ability of virtual reality and other immersive communication technologies to provide sensory experiences that mimic real-world interactions makes it a powerful tool in the fight for human rights. This Panel aims to develop the following question: How can we use Virtual Reality and other immersive communications technologies to address specific human rights issues? In this context, we Call for Papers, both theoretical and empirical, to understand how existing and emerging digital technologies could enable citizens to develop the values, skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary to promote and assist the future implementation of human rights standards. To achieve the objectives proposed in this panel we welcome research approaches addressing the following questions, inter alia: Q.1: How can virtual reality be used to promote human rights education and raise global awareness of human rights violations? Q.2: How can immersive technologies be integrated into monitoring systems to predict human rights violations in real time and facilitate preventive interventions? Q.3: How can virtual reality be used to simulate the experiences of refugees and victims of conflict, and what are the benefits and challenges of this approach in terms of outreach and humanitarian support? Q. 4: What are the benefits and challenges of using virtual reality for early conflict analysis, and how can this technology help in the prevention of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity? Q. 5: How can immersive technologies be employed to anticipate and mitigate the human rights impacts of climate change, especially in vulnerable communities? Q. 6: How can developers of virtual reality technologies ensure that their products do not perpetuate stereotypes or discrimination, and what are the best practices for promoting equality and inclusion?
