Abstract

This panel explores how intersectionality takes shape in digital advocacy, political discourse, and media representation. Papers in this panel highlight both the potential of and the challenges to intersectionality in contemporary activism. By examining feminist movements, sex workers’ rights, parliamentary hearings, and media portrayals across different national contexts, the panel examines the ways intersectionality is co-opted or erased in digital (news) media. By exploring feminist and activist discourses, self-representation, and allyship in online spaces, this panel interrogates how digital advocacy navigates power dynamics, visibility and marginalization. It considers the role of social media in mobilizing intersectional claims, while also analyzing how institutional and political contexts influence digital representations of marginalized groups. The panel facilitates a critical lens on the role of intersectionality in advocacy and (media) representation, questioning its transformative potential in both online and offline spaces. By addressing how intersectionality is articulated or contested in different political and media environments, this panel contributes to a more thorough understanding of the role of digital platforms for advocacy.
