This session examines the interconnected crises of statelessness, denial of citizenship, and prolonged displacement as experienced by the Rohingya in Bangladesh. Drawing on ethnographic research this study illustrates how prolonged displacement creates a continual process of socio-spatial containment for the stateless Rohingya. The host state employs various mechanisms of territorial and social governance to establish a condition of “permanent temporariness,” where mobility is restricted and autonomy is either denied or criminalized. By placing these practices within the larger context of postcolonial statecraft and global asylum politics, the discussion highlights how host states and international actors contribute to the precarious situation of refugees. Additionally, the talk will address the current curriculum frameworks to emphasize the importance of inclusive education in refugee camps, as this supports future integration opportunities for the Rohingya.
