Abstract

Most scholars of intelligence have paid rather insufficient attention to questions of research design. Aiming for genuine explanations (rather than mere descriptions of or prescriptions for intelligence politics), this panel encourages scholars to exchange their experiences with more advanced research techniques. For example, how could qualitative and multiple-method research help us to illuminate the interface between the actual practices of intelligence oversight and their institutionalised frameworks? What experiences have scholars made with expert interviews, process-tracing or content analysis in the intelligence studies domain? These are just a few examples of questions that paper writers might want to consider.
