The goal of the panel is to integrate the two important streams of political science discourse: the theory of democracy (focus on democratization, consolidation and promoting the quality of democracy) and Europeanization. The participants are going to discuss both practical and theoretical dilemmas present in the dialogue between the two. So far the academic debate concentrated on the issue of the so called ‘fourth wave of democratization’ exploring the transformative impact of the EUropeanization pressures in Central and Eastern Europe. This panel will be dedicated to stretching the Europeanization perspective beyond the transition and democratization phase and analyze the interactions between the dynamics of democratic process and Europeanization in consolidated political systems as well as in newly established democratic polities. This shall link the idea of a democracy to the process globalization and European integration. Introducing the multi-level nature of the analysis, with a particular attention to the supra-national level, the panel will contribute to the bridging of Europeanization / democratization discourses and the on-going debate on the perspectives of supranational democracy in Europe.
