This panel aims to revive the theoretical debate and empirical research on the enlargement and neighbourhood policies of the EU, as well as to assess how these are developed to enhance integration of the EU's closest proximity with the acquis and values of the EU. While building on and refreshing long-established theoretical paradigms of enlargement studies-such as socialisation, conditionality, and bilateral interdependence-the contributions to the panel also aim to update the research agenda on critical cases in the enlargement process (such as Turkey) as well as on economic, social, and institutional (e.g., the ENP current status) bearing of the EU towards its neighbourhood.
