Abstract

From massive demonstrations against same-sex marriage in major French cities to the adoption of a law against "homosexual propaganda" in Russia, recent movement successes have been accompanied by unexpected waves of opposition to LGBT rights. New pieces of legislation "protecting" traditional families family and marriage have been adopted and several constitutions have been amended in order to prevent equal rights for gays and lesbians. New counter-discourses have also emerged. The Catholic Church has for instance elaborated complex arguments about the "ideology of gender", which serve to combat both LGBT and feminist movements, as well as to hinder the development of gender studies. While there is a burgeoning literature on LGBT struggles, we know very little about their opponents. This panel aims therefore to analyze recent waves of opposition to LGBT rights across Europe, focusing on their emergence, their functioning and their strategies. It will more precisely address the following questions: (1) What kinds of discourses are used against LGBT rights in Europe? (2) Who are the actors involved in these forms of resistance? (3) What is the role of religion and nationalism in these oppositions? (4) Can we identify similar patterns (arguments, strategies, etc.) across borders? (5) To which extent these oppositions are fueled by recent domestic and international successes and increased mobilization by LGBT actors? (6) To which extent these oppositions are contributing to the emergence of new boundaries across Europe?
