This panel investigates different dynamics of opposition to gender equality in Europe. The focus is both theoretical and empirical. The theoretical paper reviews the potential contribution of a main strand of theory: social movement theory. The empirical papers all have a focus on opposition under conditions of institutionalized gender equality: what form does opposition then take? What are the main narratives or master frames? Who is then actively opposing what? To what extent are attitudes of citizens in countries formally adopting gender equality actually opposing gender equality? The empirical papers all also feed the results of their analysis back to theory: when and why is opposition successful?
