This panel scrutinizes the influence, roles and responsibilities of non-state actors, such as business, non-profit organizations and social movements in fostering effective, equitable and legitimate earth system governance. The panel will address the following questions: Who qualifies as an agent, taking into account the different levels, resources and interests of the various actors and institutions aiming to drive environmental and social change? How is authority granted to these agents and how is it exercised? And also: how can we evaluate the relevance and implications of these agents in governing the anthropocene? The panel is interested in diverse approaches, perspectives and methodologies in answering these questions. Contributions examining new forms of organization and mobilization, their historical continuity and transformative potential against contemporary hegemonic ideological and material structures are especially encouraged.
