Abstract

The concept of power is moving back into prominence as a central focus for social theory in two different perspectives. On the liberal/analytic side power is integrally related to luck and freedom, and in the work of John Harsanyi to a non-ideological push for objectivity, while an author like Bertrand de Jouvenal gives a more ‘realist’ (Lasswellian?) view. On the post-Marxist/post-structuralist side power is linked to knowledge and even conceptions of time are conditioned. These papers present insights into current political theory and the returning centrality of ‘power’ in tackling social development after the GFC.
