The panel welcomes contribution from the sphere of democracy, authoritarian regimes and case studies addressing the transition to democratic governance, the establishment of democratic institutions and the relationships between democratic and autocratic actors. Furthermore, the panel will also touch upon issues related to public reason and rational choice. The ongoing debate regarding the process of accomplishing democracy in societies that embrace autocratic values is always open to innovative solutions and explanations for the failed attempts of establishing the rule of law and democratic governance. In this panel there will be special focus on the case of China, which has been at the fore front of the agenda of discussions in the area of political regimes with the so called ideal “China model”. The specific questions addressed revolve around: What is the meaning of the Chinese model? Where is China’s political regime heading? How is the Chinese government becoming legitimate? How can we understand its legitimacy/what is the Chinese approach to achieving internal legitimacy? Papers will also highlight particular case studies from Central Asia, a region with a complicated political landscape, where democratic efforts do not seem to prevail up to now, offering possible solutions and scenarios for the near future.
