Abstract

WE WELCOME ALL PANEL AND PAPER PROPOSALS ON DEMOCRACY AND DEMOCRATISATION. BELOW ARE SOME SPECIFIC IDEAS FROM THE SECTION CHAIRS. The section covers topics related to the changing nature of modern democracy and the process of democratisation. Its aim is to bring together panelists with various research approaches towards challenges that democracy faces in the 21st century. These challenges pose a spectrum of theoretical and practical questions about the philosophical background of governing regimes in the world, their changing forms over the centuries and the benefits and flaws of the democratic rule.. Submissions welcomed by the proposed section include works on thinkers and philosophers of democracy, socioeconomic conditions of various regimes, regime transitions, the relationship of globalisation processes and democracy, and many others. The three panels proposed by the section chair are focusing on three specific challenges to modern democracy: first, the apparent decline of nation-states as the vehicles of the democratic rule, second, the problem of unfinished transitions from a non-democratic to a democratic regime and the long-term survival of hybrid regimes, and third, the question of economic inequality and its impact on the working of a democratic regime. The proposed section would be promoted and chaired by members of the International Association of the Political Science Students. Three proposed panels would be also chaired by IAPSS member. The section is based on the 2016 IAPSS Annual Theme of “Challenging Democracy” and includes section chair-proposed panels on the topics of “The end of the Nation State?”, “Hybrid Regimes and Imperfect Democratisation” and “Economic Democracy”.
