Abstract

According to realist scholars of International Relations, power is the driving force behind all political action. As states are mainly concerned with ensuring their own survival, and power is the primary means of doing so, states will constantly engage in power maximizing behavior. This power struggle takes place at both the global and the regional level, with hegemony as the ultimate prize. But how do states behave once they have reached (regional) hegemony? How is power achieved and maintained? When and why do states engage in realpolitik, and is (the threat of) military, economic, or political aggression the best - or even the only - way of achieving one's interests? This panel is composed of panels concerning these, and other, questions relating to power (in) politics.
