The establishment of transitional justice mechanisms in a post-conflict or post-authoritarian setting has implications at a societal level, both intended as well as unintended. This panel aims at exploring transitional justice from a pragmatic perspective and will address several questions. What are the processes leading to the establishment of those mechanisms and what is the level of domestic and international involvement? What are the policies that guide the effective implementation of transitional justice mechanisms? Finally, what is the impact of their outcomes, such as judgments by domestic or international courts or recommendations compiled in the final report of truth commissions? Through answering these questions the panel will attempt to elucidate some of the challenges emerging before, during, and after the establishment of transitional justice mechanisms.
