Abstract

Once the emergence of the concepts 'peacekeeping' and 'peacebuilding' implied on a practical perspective by the international community, their continuum reformulation and improvement were due to the fact that the reality on the ground was imbued with a diverse levels of challenge. Those challenges not only had a negative impact on functioning of those peace strategies, as well as they are the main reason of why there is still a lack on comprehending what both peacekeeping and peacebuilding are really facing on the ground. In this sense, the panel on "Future Trends and Challenges in Peace-Keeping and Peacebuilding" is resulted from the reflection on what is the scenario both peacekeeping and peacebuilding face, will face and need to improve. From three different contributions, this panel will discuss the future trends and challenges over this issue based, first, on how local peacebuilders experience difficult circumstances and which strategies they use to achieve personal security and regional peace regarding the environmental education in Israel and Palestine. Second, how the Government of Canada advanced the concept of 'Whole-of-Government' as an important feature of the country’s international engagement in areas of conflict, fragility and instability worldwide and, third, on 'why organised crime persists into post-war contexts and how it can present obstacles or even opportunities for peace?'. This question takes for granted the challenge of dealing with organised crime while confronting peacebuilding tasks in countries such as South Africa, Northern Ireland, Colombia and Lebanon.
