So far literature on non-state actors and their perceived threat on security on a state have focused on the size, organizational level and level of violence of the non-state actor. There is little to no literature on the effect the presence in social media (Facebook, Twitter and other) is affecting the perceived threat level. In this paper we want to address this issue via a mixed methods approach. A event history analysis will give insight in the overall effect of social media presence on the perceived threat while a qualitative content analysis will highlight the relation between the presence of the non-state actors in social media and the perception of security threats.
