Abstract

The article takes stock of recent empirical proof of how the ideology of political parties defines the opportunities and the forms of women’s political representation thereby reassessing the claim that the left is still the most advantageous ideological space for women’s and feminist representation. Second, it also discusses the findings about left- and rightwing women’s representation from the angle of changing normative ideals of political representation, and of what it means to represent women and women’s interests, i.e. the adoption of a broad and inclusive view on the sites, actors and processes of representation as well as considerations concerning women and women’s interests as ideologically diverse, which seriously challenge the assumption that women’s political representation only benefits from leftwing ideologies.
