Abstract

Political parties are central to the representation of women and women’s interests in society; as such, exploring the extent to which parties seek to engage women is critical for feminist scholars. Drawing upon analyses of the various strategies adopted by political parties at the societal, national and transnational level, this panel considers the following issues: how, where and why parties target women voters; whether ideology mediates the ability of political parties to tailor their messages to women; how women organise within political parties and where this has been successful in feminisng parties; how party families at the transnational level can offer a useful framework for understanding women’s representation; and, the extent to which parties seek to make links with the women’s movement as a way to promote women’s issues. The panel addresses these questions in the contemporary context of political, economic and social crises.
