Abstract

There is a common underlying assumption in parts of the literature that participatory democracy is some sort of a safeguard against corruption. Often defined as a ‘best practice’, participatory democracy can not only prevent corruption, through transparent policy-making processes, but also contribute to overcome existing practices of corruption in the daily workings of governments.
