Abstract

Cosmopolitanism an European political philosophy began about 4000 years ago when Diogenes the Cynic , the Greek philosopher coined the phrase 'I am a cosmopolite'-a "I am a citizen of the world" and later in the 18th Century one of Europe's foremost political philosophers then Immanuel Kant in the background of the European War of Prussia and Austria with France under Napoleon sought for a an everlasting Peace in Europe that a unified Europe ,albeit in Kant's perspective a Republican one will provide the integration ,civic ,political and economic that will end all Europeans wars, this cosmopolitan concept of embracing other cultures(European) into one body sees the current European Union as a vision fulfilled, yet cosmopolitanism on the political level of universal European ideal comes on the back of successful nation states , a la France and Germany, Netherlands and other European states with politcial and socio-economic stability and economic capacity and will to encourage integration, yet nationalisms with its various myths, histories and values, interpreted biasly to purport nationalistic tendencies to unite the nation is anathema of cosmopolitanism which overlooks national boundaries, cultures and respect and accept the other. Yet my central theme in my PHD research you need both sides of the coin, where in only stable and prospering nation states can provide the necessary socio-political conditions or an environment to care or help for the other. For example in the Australian context and help with other nation states for the Acheh Tsunami Indonesia, the refugees in Sudan, the war against ISIS involved in genocide of Hazeras and Kurds can only be possible if the nation state is firstly stable successful and prosperous hence the paradox that you need integration of various migrant communities in a national ethos in order for cosmopolitan tendencies to grow.
