Abstract

Not only in European Member States, but also in the EU itself, we are facing phenomenons of territorlial "disintegration". The referendum in Scotland, secession trends in Catalonia, but also in Flanders, South Tyrol etc. on the one hand - and trends towards territorial "Disintegration" in the EU - "Grexit" (Greece leaving the Euro Zone) and "Brexit" (the UK referendum on the EU) on the other hand: the paper compares these cases concerning drivers and causes and takes into account also the Canadian/Quebec case. The paper is searching for a concept of territorial "Disintegration" and explanations for centrifugal trends in multi-level systems, linking different "dimensions" of integration (Nye 1969) in multi-level systems, the political/institutional, the individual/participatory, the economic and the territorial: How are simultaneos centrifugal and centripetal trends in these different dimensions interrelated? Alternative: Section 11, 35.
