There has been considerable interest in the end to end online assessment journey within the Higher Education sector in recent years. A significant number of providers now benefit from an institution wide approach to online submission, online marking, online feedback and highly innovative online assessment analytics. This paper reviews the current landscape in HE with a particular focus on new drivers behind the progression from manual to online assessment for academics as well as key challenges facing institutions in terms of systems development, policy, processes and people. It outlines some of the significant pedagogical benefits enabled by online assessment for students of Political Science before exploring new opportunities to enhance teaching and learning provision including the development of student facing dashboards. It finishes by looking at the future of EMA development within the sector and what this means for the future student learning experience.
