Abstract

European Eurydice policy and the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study convey a specific idea of what makes a good citizen, a particular view on how citizens should relate to each other, the state and the environment. In other words, such policy documents use certain theories of democracy and citizenship. But they remain vague about the fundamental assumptions of these theories. Clarifying such framework is relevant because the political conceptions communicated in the curriculum need to become the object of the students’ reflection and evaluation with regard to their autonomy. In this presentation, the assumptions behind these policies on what kind of citizenship has to be stimulated will be discussed.
