Influences on the Perception of Democracy Among Youth: A Czech Example

Abstract

This paper presents findings about the knowledge of, awareness about, and interest in democracy and democratic processes among pre-voting age youth in the Czech Republic, and explores underlying factors influencing their perceptions. The study draws on data collected through questionnaires and interviews, on a random sample of 308 students aged 15-18, recruited from six vocational schools and six high-schools (gymnasia) across the Czech Republic. The data, collected at the time of the first round of the Czech presidential elections in January 2018, offers insight into how these students were positioned towards an actual election. The participants were surveyed on their knowledge and understanding of democracy, and were subsequently asked to cast their preference for the nine official presidential candidates. The analysis cross-examines their choices of presidential candidates; their responses to conceptual questions on democracy and elections; the sources and channels of information that influence their opinions and positions; and socio-demographic data.
